Para desenvolver este projeto, foi essencial partir de uma pesquisa geral sobre cybertext e as suas diversas aplicações possíveis. Posteriormente, o grande desafio seria aplicar o conto Un conte à votre façon, de Raymond Queneau (1967), num artefacto editorial que fizesse o leitor participar ativamente de modo a fazer escolhas. Decidi optar por um objeto físico, pela razão de dar destaque à dimensão manual e interativa do mesmo.
To develop this project, it was essential to start with general research on cybertext and its various possible applications. Subsequently, the great challenge would be to apply Raymond Queneau's short story "Un conte à votre façon" (1967) to an editorial artifact that would make the reader actively participate by making choices. I decided to opt for a physical object, in order to highlight its manual and interactive dimension.
Comecei por definir uma medida base para os cartões, 6 x 12 cm, de modo a ser fácil de manuseá-los e ocuparem menos espaço. Nesta primeira fase exploratória, as 22 cartas foram medidas e cortadas sem rigor num papel de rascunho, estudei possíveis alternativas de mapas visuais de cada história, para não interferirem entre si. Cada carta é devidamente numerada (1 a 21) e com até duas direções/opções diferentes. Apaguei, acrescentei e alterei os números e orientações dos cartões sem compromisso definitivo, sendo estes testes necessários para compreender melhor o que pretendia com o meu projeto.
I began by defining a base measurement for the cards, 6 x 12 cm, so that they would be easy to handle and take up less space. In this first exploratory phase, the 22 cards were measured and cut without precision on scrap paper, and I studied possible alternatives for visual maps of each story, so that they wouldn't interfere with one another. Each card is properly numbered (1 to 21) and has up to two different directions/options. I erased, added, and changed the numbers and orientations of the cards without any definitive commitment, as these tests were necessary to better understand what I intended for my project.
Desenvolvi um sistema de linhas direcionais (verticais e horizontais). O leitor coloca a carta número 1 no centro de uma grande superfície livre, lê o texto apresentado e, a partir daí, é levado a fazer uma escolha. Procura o número pretendido entre as cartas e posiciona-a do lado da escolha correspondente, assim sucessivamente até alcançar o destino final da narrativa, a carta número 21.
I developed a system of directional lines (vertical and horizontal). The reader places card number 1 in the center of a large, open surface, reads the text presented, and from there is prompted to make a choice. They search for the desired number among the cards and position it on the side corresponding to their choice, and so on, until reaching the story's final destination, card number 21.
O sistema cromático divide-se em 3 partes que identificam as 3 narrativas do conto, sendo estas o verde para a história três ervilhas alegres (4 - 21), roxo para a história dos três caules de feijão altos e esguios (2; 16 - 21) e vermelho para a história dos três arbustos de jardim (3; 17-21). As barras laterais funcionam para visualizar rapidamente a orientação da carta, como também serve para reforçar a hierarquia entre o número da carta (barra maior) e os próximos números (barras menores). Quando as histórias se cruzam as cores unem-se até ao fim.
The chromatic system is divided into 3 parts that identify the 3 narratives within the story: green for the tale of the three happy peas (4 - 21), purple for the tale of the three tall, slender bean stalks (2; 16 - 21), and red for the tale of the three garden shrubs (3; 17-21). The side bars serve to quickly visualize the card's orientation, and also serve to reinforce the hierarchy between the card's number (larger bar) and the following numbers (smaller bars). When the stories intersect, the colors merge together until the end.
